The Atlantic will take your breath — literally, it hovers around 13°C even in February. False Bay is the warm side, and the coastline between Muizenberg and Simon's Town hides a chain of tidal pools built a century ago and maintained by the sea itself.
Dalebrook in Kalk Bay is the famous one. St James, with its striped huts, is the photographed one. But walk ten minutes further to the pools below Danger Beach and you'll likely swim alone with the kelp and the odd curious octopus.
For the brave
Sandy Cove in Llandudno-adjacent Oudekraal, where granite boulders make a natural amphitheatre; Beta Beach in Bakoven at sunset, tiny and impossibly sheltered; and Smitswinkel Bay near Cape Point — no road access, a steep 25-minute path down, and a crescent of sand that feels like a rumour. Pack out everything you pack in.
